World premiere - ship supported remote trail running in East Greenland
Oceanwide Expeditions launches a brand new activity in polar adventure travel. The vessel owner & operator will offer an ultimate chance for conditioned trail runners to participate in a remote Arctic trail running scout trip in East Greenland in September 2016.
Scouts wanted
Oceanwide Expeditions is looking for running experts to come onboard in order to pilot a real first time trail running voyage onboard the expedition vessel MV Ortelius in East Greenland during 14 – 21 September 2016. Due to the remoteness of the region, this voyage will be ship supported all the way. The adventure cruise starts and ends in Iceland. The ship will become a comfortable floating base for the activity.
Runners eat, sleep, and relax onboard and Oceanwide Expeditions will provide at least one long trail running option. The ship´s expedition team will take care of the runners’ special needs onshore: transportation and landings with small inflatable zodiacs and check points. It’s a real Arctic challenge in open terrain when autumn colors are fading and winter is kicking in with sub-zero temperatures at night and sometimes during the day as well. Harsh conditions with first snow fall must be expected and runners have to be prepared for this. The tundra can be slippery when wet and icy. Expert runners will have to submit and sign a personal questionnaire incl. waiver when signing on. Personal running gear, clothes and other special equipment will be brought by individual runners.
Trail-breaking off the trodden path
The highlight of this trail-breaking voyage for selected pioneering runners is the opportunity to run at least one full day ashore at Cape Hofmann Halvø an area known for viewing musk oxen. A support zodiac will sail parallel with the runners along the shore. The group will tackle some ascending slopes further inland with a checkpoint established half way up the run. The finish line will be the coast of Rypefjord from where the runners will be picked up by a zodiac. Total distance is about 25+ km with 250 meters up and downhill. The final layout of the run is subject to change dictated by prevailing weather conditions.
Unique offer
Oceanwide Expeditions will provide full board on the ship incl. bus transfer from Reykjavik to Akureyri and back. The 7-night cruise has 4 days for landings in East Greenland (incl. 1 full-day trail run), and 2 days at sea. The trail running is free of any supplementary costs in this first pilot year.
