Bird species on St. Helena

Though lacking most of its endemic species, this remote island offers an abundance of photogenic birdlife

Region: Antarctica

Destinations: St. Helena

St. Helena: a haven for birds and bird photographers

Despite the fact that nearly all of this remote volcanic island’s native birds are extinct, BirdLife International has designated St. Helena an Important Bird Area due to its abundance of breeding birds. Noddies, terns, petrels, and tropic birds nest on the island, along with St. Helena’s only remaining endemic bird: the St. Helena plover, also known as the wirebird for its wire-like legs.
