The ice-packed waterway of Hinlopen Strait
Hinlopen Strait is a waterway that divides Svalbard’s largest island, Spitsbergen, from its second-largest island, Nordaustlandet. Thick with pack ice, Hinlopen Strait is at various points between 10 and 60 km wide (6.2 and 37.3 miles) and measures 150 km (93 miles) in length. It is said to be named after seventeenth-century Dutch merchant, Thijmen Jacobsz Hinlopen.
