Leave the vessel far behind on our long hikes activity
Our long hikes activity allows you to immerse yourself deeply in the sensory experience of Greenland and Svalbard. Enjoy the vibrant surroundings of the Arctic summer far from the vessel as you embark on a full-day hike, crossing tundra, rivers, and ruggedly beautiful backcountry.
How does the long hikes activity work?
We will form groups and leave the vessel in the morning, accompanied by armed expedition guides and a Zodiac that will sail ahead to watch for polar bears. Stopping for occasional rests and taking our lunch in the field, we will then meet the ship at a pickup point roughly 15 km (9 miles) away.
Passengers who do not take part in this activity will have a landing in the morning at the start point of the walk, then sail to the end point of the walk in the afternoon for their second landing.
How physically fit do I need to be?
You must have the ability and willingness to walk at least 15 km (9 miles) for up to six hours in semi-rough terrain that includes rocky shorelines, tundra, low hills, and river crossings. We will walk at a modest pace, have rest periods during the walk, and avoid arduous alpine terrain.
Do I need to have hiking experience?
You do not need to have hiking experience, but you’ll need to have a good understanding of your limitations. As mentioned above, you must be in good health and physical fitness.
Does the long hikes activity cost anything?
No, this activity is free of charge but must be reserved before your voyage.
Is this activity safe?
Yes, you will always be accompanied by an expedition guide trained in using a bear deterrent. A Zodiac, where possible and needed, will also cruise ahead of all hiking parties to scout for polar bears.
Do I have to bring my own boots?
No, we provide high-quality rubber muck boots suitable for this activity. The boots are free of charge, available in a wide variety of sizes, and will keep your feet warm and dry when crossing rivers and boggy ground. More details can be found in the hiking activity manual and itinerary.
Please don’t forget to sign up for the long hiking activity when you book your cabin, so we can plan ahead.
