The Arctic mining settlement of Ny London
Located in Kongsfjorden on the south side of Blomstrandøya, Ny London is a former mining post just 5 km (3.1 miles) north of Ny-Ålesund, one of the planet’s most northern settlements. Ny London was established in 1911 to mine marble, then left to the elements in 1920. Today Ny London’s weathered huts and ruins of rusted machinery make for a mining-era time capsule and prized Svalbard cultural attraction.
